"Lake Orion American Legion member Steve Hauxwell remembers the original Wagon Wheel Tavern, ‘the place my dad went to, and gave me a one-dollar-bill to get a malt or a coke," he said, noting the delicious food in the 70s.
‘I knew the Wagon Wheel just from watching the older generation go in because I lived right there in town. It was pretty cool because it was really dingy looking when you walked by, you were like, ‘oh what’s in there? he said."
The original Wagon Wheel Tavern, owned by George Wright in the 1920s, was first located at 27 South Broadway from what residents say now Twice Blessed. It was moved to 102 South Broadway after a fire. It reopened in 1981 after the hardware store. The only thing that was saved from the fire was the shuffleboard table.
Afterwards, Larry Kelly and Leroy Bayes owned the Wagon Wheel until 2000. This place attracted many bands and became the "go to" place for quite some time. The place sat empty for some time and in January 2014 the roof collapsed from a snowstorm and was demolished.
